Geologically, Sardonyx is defined by its alternating layers of sarda brownish red chalcedony coloured by iron oxideand parallel bands of white or black onyx. Forming within the trigonal crystal system, it typically precipitates from silica rich waters in the cavities of volcanic or sedimentary rocks.
